Historic details behind the naming of Saturday: Saturday was named after the Roman god Saturn - the god of time, generation, dissolution, abundance, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal, and liberation. In Old English with the form Sæternesdæġ, Sæterndæġ or Sæterdæġ. This is one example where the English base retained the original Roman god - as there was no Germanic god that serves as a equivalent of the Roman god Saturn.
