Background information

E pluribus unum (Out of many, one): The traditional motto of the United States until 1956 was E pluribus unum (Out of many, one). It appeared on the Great Seal and first appeared on US coins in 1786.
You will notice the motto is made up of 13 letters - some suggest this was done intentionally to mirror the 13 States of the original country.
