Background information

Why does it feel good to agree with a social media post: We've all seen those social media posts designed to drive engagement:

  • Most people won't take even a minute to show their support for X, will you be one of the few?
  • Prove to the Devil you aren't evil by typing Amen.
  • Only a non-believe will skip this…
Why does this work on some people, with the post getting an endless list of people all typing the same affirmation over and over without adding anything new? Of course everyone is different, but psychology gives us a wide range of biases and fallacies to consider here.

The strongest example is an 'Argumentum ad populum fallacy' occurring - responding the same way as other people is comforting - I must be correct, look at how many other people agree! This is also called the Bandwagon Argument or an Appeal to the majority. More details on the Argumentum ad populum fallacy here.

And of course there is the related 'Prevalent proof fallacy' to consider - you want other people to see how many people, including yourself, agree with the comment, as if that gives it more weight. More information on the Prevalent proof fallacy here.

Finally, it is often just easier to agree with the mob than stand up and disagree, although sometimes the psychological force of Reactance is very strong - when you feel someone is attempting to limit your choice of response and/or range of options.

So the next time you feel the urge to respond to a post with "For sure!" or "Amen" take a step back, consider your motivations, and maybe ask a question about the assumptions, or provide a counterexample. Even a "Yes, but don't forget…" response will move the conversation forward in a more productive direction.
